Kirn was selected as a finalist in the Large Village category in 2003. Although not winning, it was rewarding for Kirn to have reached this level.

The judge’s final report commented favourably, not only on EnviroKirn Action Group’s efforts, but also the efforts of others in the area.

Fairhaven Estate, formerly a home to US Navy personnel has been transformed and is now maintained to an extremely high standard.

The village now has an even more friendly, welcoming face and offers a promenade and garden areaa where children and adults alike can have fun -

- whether at the maze or the other games and attractions on offer.

The EnviroKirn group are very keen to have the village re-invent itself, show that it has it’s own identity and is not just a suburb of Dunoon.

The judges liked:

  1. The children’s trough garden,
  2. The standard of maintenance and also the tree and shrub plantings at Fairhaven,
  3. Kirn Parish church and surrounds.

The judges did not like:

  1. The Queen’s hotel frontage,
  2. Excessive amounts of flotsam and jetsam on the shore and beach,
  3. Poor condition of street furniture.

The floral troughs in Alexandra Parade constructed and planted by children from schools in the area provide a colourful welcome to all who enter the village.

Congratulations to all concerned on Kirn's success

EnviroKirn would like to congratulate and thank all those responsible for the ground maintenance at Fairhaven and Kirn Parish Church for their excellent work and those who have contributed in any way to the improvements to the area, whether through hands on work or donations. Your involvement has provided much appreciated environmental and community benefits.
