Appeal for Volunteers

At present, EnviroKirn has a willing force of about ten volunteers who are available (with some prior warning) to assist in maintaining the gardens, beach area and the general tidying up of Kirn promenade.

A recent request for new volunteers to complement the ten has resulted in a further fourteen potential volunteers showing an interest.

KIRN GOES FOR GOLD

ENVIROKIRN Action Group hosted a Meet & Greet evening in the Royal Marine Hotel on Monday 7th March 2011 at 7:30 pm to hear how the committee hopes to raise Kirn’s profile in the 2011 ‘Beautiful Scotland’ competition. As a result of this meeting, we are now fortunate to have about 30 volunteers on the team this year! Thank you to all who attended. It was a very productive evening as it brought together members of the Community, local police, representatives of Kirn Primary School and Dunoon Grammar School and Argyll and Bute Council. The discussions involved street and beach litter and it was agreed that Kirn will take part this year in the National Spring Clean. Teams of Volunteers will be planting and watering out tubs and baskets, weeding around their boundries and painting and repairing as and when it is needed… there is still space for more volunteers!

To date the group has achieved a silver award.  Kirn Primary School pupils, accommpanied by their teachers, carried out a ‘Street Clean’ within the Kirn village area on Friday 6th May. Apparently the streets were found to be in a very clean and tidy state that the youngsters were reportedly impressed with Kirn. Kirn volunteers will be on the beach and streets during Saturday 7th as part of the National Spring Clean. Teachers and school pupils are also going to be doing their bit by growing plants in school gardens.

The committee hopes that shop owners and householders will contribute to the continued improvement of the village by freshening-up their premises with a lick of paint and weeding their boundaries. Empty premises present a problem which lies outwith the scope of EnviroKirn. Thus, with the enthusiasm and goodwill exhibited by those present on Monday evening, perhaps a Gold Award may be within our sights this year. (Dunoon Observer & Argyllshire Standard dated 11th March 2011 carried this report for us)

Provisional Dates for your Diaries. Friday 6th May and Saturday 7th May 2011 - National Spring Clean. EnviroKirn welcomes any ideas for improvements to our area, from all Kirn residents. We do hope you will take up this challenge and help us keep the village looking its best.
