Kirn in Bloom
2011- Final Preparations underway
Kirn Promenade Tubs – Planting :
The date for planting up the tubs and containers for the summer display set for Tuesday, 31st May at 11:00am was a great success.
Quite a number of EnviroKirn volunteers helped with this task and transformed the promenade to a scene of bright colour. The new tubs have been located at various locations within the Kirn promenade area and along Alexandra Parade. The Kirn School Gardens, maintained by John Glass, as his project are looking most impressive.
On the subject of gardening activities, quite a number of homeowners have cleared the base of their garden walls and pavements of weeds, in preparation of the forthcoming competition in August – goodness me, that’s next week! A reminder for eradicating those unwanted weeds is to apply a liberal dressing of cooking salt and this should discourage further growth. The glyphosate based weedkiller “Round Up” is the only weed treatment permitted by the Council, but thesalt is equally acceptable.
On Saturday 30th July, about twelve EnviroKirn volunteers, turned out to remove weeds and unsightly growth from walls of buildings, footpaths and the new and old flower tubs. An amazing amount was achieved partly due to the brilliant sunshine and, most of all, the enthusiasm of the volunteers. Now we are hopefully ready for the Beautiful Scotland Judges on 3rd August. Fingers crossed we hope to do better than last year. We will find out at the Awards ceremony in Bute on 12th September.
It should be mentioned that quite recently, a good number of business premises, located along Kirns promenade, have had a new lease of life by being painted, tidied up and opened for trade – a real transformation of Kirns frontage compared to previous years.

Kirn In Bloom 2011

Last year, Marion Morrison (EnviroKirn Secretary) penned the following poem, “Judgement Day” and, it seems most fitting to include the poem this year .
The Day of Judgement is Nigh
Have you heard that the judges are coming
From Beautiful Scotland in Bloom?
It’s time to tidy the village so get out
Your paintbrush and your broom,
Sweep down your path or your pavement
And freshen that tired old paint;
Put out a new floral arrangement
Be it modern, post modern or quaint.
And it’s not just the prom they’re inspecting.
They’ll be going all over the place.
It’s litter free streets they’re expecting -
And no weeds – they’re a perfect disgrace.
Good people of Kirn, in your village take pride
And show other folk how we care.
With this charming wee spot on the banks of the Clyde
Surely no other place can compare?
Composed by Marion Morrison (2010)

The village now has an even more friendly, welcoming face and offers a promenade and garden area where children and adults alike can enjoy the the sea and the games or just sit and relax and enjoy the lovely sea views. |
| The maze wall painting was designed by a local artist called Bob Brown and painted by young members of the community. EnviroKirn are very happy with the results and hope to have all the answers to the puzzles – when they have figured them out! Watch this space……… |
